Welcome to The Dylan Thomas Theatre, Swansea
The Dylan Thomas Theatre is Swansea’s only waterside theatre venue and has been the home of the award-winning Swansea Little Theatre since 1979. We are a thriving community theatre in the heart of the Maritime Cultural Quarter, located in the SA1 area of Swansea and we currently attract over 15,000 visitors per year. The theatre has played host to a wide diversity of productions, including local dance groups, music festivals, professional touring companies, as well as cabaret acts and stand-up comedy. We have welcomed Eddie Izzard, Russell Kane and the BBC, amongst many.
We are delighted that our theatre and continuing development is allowing us to accommodate the needs of even more community groups and visitors, and to broaden our historic contribution to the arts in Swansea. We have recently upgraded our theatrical lighting and sound with a substantial grant from Cory Environmental Trust and have (as reported by a professional lighting technician) the best lighting of any theatre in the country, with a full LED rig and the latest control desks.
Our main Bar/Foyer area is ideal for small shows, cabaret and has been used extensively for private parties, book launches and presentations. The building is now fully accessible to all with ramps, lowered bar and box office, disabled toilets and baby changing facilities. The stage is ramped and fully accessible, plus disabled toilets and shower backstage.
We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and are committed to the principal of continual environmental improvement and keep our environmental impacts to a minimum.
We have unique panels which tell the story of ‘Wales’ most famous poet, Dylan Thomas and his time as an actor with Swansea Little Theatre in the 1930s, from the book ‘Dylan the Actor’ by Heather Holt, plus ‘Swansea’s Dylan’ a glimpse of the places and people that affected and influenced the writing of young Dylan.
Besides our own annual programme, the theatre has been increasingly used by other local dance/theatre companies, community groups and national touring theatre groups. These include Theatr na n’Og, to whom the Theatre plays host for three months of the year, allowing over 6000 school children to experience interactive theatre.
Letting Information
As a community theatre, we offer a range of services from theatre letting, to corporate meetings, to a social venue and costume and props letting.
The Dylan Thomas Theatre is one of the country’s most accessible venues, equipped to deal with the needs of a broad range of theatre and entertainment companies. A grant in 2015 has enabled us to upgrade our lighting and sound facilities and we offer state-of-the-art LED and digital equipment, equal to any theatre in the country. Our last project involved a grant from Cory Environmental for a completely new-sprung stage floor, ideal for dance as well as theatrical performances.
